Definition
Example from the poem
How effective do you think it was? Did you like it?
Simile
Saying that one thing is similar to another e.g. My fingers are like ice.
Dumb as a dog he listened,
Yes because i know how dumb he is
Metaphor
Saying that one thing is another e.g. My fingers are ice.
The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
Yes because I  know what It sort of looks like.
Alliteration
Starting a series of words with the same consonant sound e.g. A big black boulder.
Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard,
Yes because i sort of know  but not because i did not understand it at first
Repetition
Repeating the same words or phrases a few times to make an idea clearer.
How Bess, the landlord's daughter,
The landlord's black-eyed daughter,
No because it is just repeating the same words
Symbolism
The use of one object or action (a symbol) to represent or suggest something else.
red=love fo the highwayman and bess/blood or death
No because i did not understand it
